Blu-ray Releases For November 2, 2010

There are some eagerly anticipated releases this week, and Toy Story 3 probably tops this list.  HBO has The Pacific and for the classics fan, Sound of Music and The Bridge On The River Kwai.  I was a fan of the original Highlander too, with the great Queen soundtrack.

I have seen all of these in SD DVD, and am eager to see The Blu-ray versions.  I’m sure Toy Story 3 will not disappoint in the transfer of course and if Band of Brothers is any indication, The Pacific will surely be up to that level of quality if not better.

DivX 7 video software released for Mac

DivX has announced the release of DivX 7 for Mac, the latest major version of its video encoding software. The decoder is free — a Pro version with encoding tools is also available for $20.

DivX is commonly used to encode video distributed over the Internet, and the Divx 7 for Mac software makes it possible for you to play .divx and .avi videos using QuickTime. DivX 7 supports High Definition (HD) H.264 .MKV (Matroska) files. Matroska is an open standard for audio and video file “containers” — it’s not an encoder — and is often used for subtitled video content.

The free download includes a six-month trial version of the DivX Pro codec and a 15-day trial of the DivX Converter application. The codec itself, however, does not expire — you can use it indefinitely without having to pay.

System requirements call for Mac OS X 10.4 or later, QuickTime 7 and a G4/800MHz or faster.

Apple near ready with release of Mac OS X 10.5.7 Juno

From Appleinsider:

Apple as early as this week could announce the release of Mac OS X 10.5.7, a seventh maintenance and security update to its Leopard operating system scheduled to deliver over a 100 minor tweaks and bug fixes.

After providing developers with weekly betas of the software for nearly two months, the Mac maker in recent days cranked up the frequency of the pre-release distributions, which is more often than not a telltale sign of an imminent release.

Apple seeds third iPhone 3.0 beta to developers

Apple has released a third beta of the upcoming iPhone 3.0 operating system, build 7A280f. The company has advised of compatibility issues, although any significant changes to the interface or features will likely be reported after developers have a chance to take a closer look at the OS. “Applications targeting devices prior to iPhone OS 3.0 beta cannot be tested in this seed,” a note read. “This bug is intended to be fixed in a future seed.” Along with the OS 3.0 beta, the company updated the SDK build. The Interface Builder 3.1 provides new drag-and-drop functionality and an enhanced document-outline view optimized for drag re-ordering. A string table interface allows users to quickly change text across several documents.

The Xcode IDE 3.1 update offers a revamped interface designed to easily create “New Target,” “New File” and “New Target” resources. The release also includes new assistant templates, an Overview toolbar, global override options and new interface shortcuts.

.Mac HomePage web application being discontinued

Dear MobileMe member:

On July 7, 2009, the .Mac HomePage web application will be discontinued. As of this date, you will no longer be able to create new pages or edit existing pages using HomePage. Any pages you’ve already published will remain live at their current web address for as long as you like. If you need to make changes to your existing pages, please do so before July 7.

Instead of HomePage, we recommend the other sharing features of your MobileMe membership. With MobileMe Gallery, you can share photos online directly from iPhoto or the web application at www.me.com. And using iWeb on your Mac, you can create custom websites and blogs and publish them to MobileMe.

We apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause. For more information, please read this FAQ. And thank you for being a MobileMe member.

Sincerely,

The MobileMe Team

Apple exploring motion-adaptive Mac OS X interface elements

As rumors swirl over Apple’s plans instate changes to the Mac OS X user interface with this year’s release of Snow Leopard, a newly discovered filing shows the company has been exploring the use of user interface elements that change their appearance based on movement.

The 10-page document, published for the first time this week, was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office less than a month prior to the release of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard back in October of 2007. Its short list of credits includes some of the Cupertino-based company’s more prominent interface designers holding rich patent portfolios, including Bas Ording, Imran Chaudhri, and Elizabeth Furches.

As for the filing, it describes techniques for generating common Mac OS X user interface elements through the use of multiple graphical layers — or a composite of a base layer, one or more pattern layers, and a shaping layer.

Apple's iPhone emerges as gaming platform

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple’s iPhone has emerged as a serious videogame platform, fulfilling the long-held promise of mobile phone gaming and positioning itself as a legitimate competitor to handheld consoles.

The Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last week was abuzz with plans about games for the iPhone and its WiFi-only cousin, the iPod touch.

With around 30 million devices on the market — 17 million iPhones and 13 million iPod Touches — and access to thousands of games at their slightest whim, consumers are buying and playing games by the tens of millions.

Meanwhile, game designers are diving headlong into the market, churning out offerings at a furious pace.

Some say the iPhone’s unique features — GPS capability, connectivity, a touch screen — and sheer variety of content gives it an edge over its more established handheld console competition, Nintendo’s DS and Sony’s PSP.

The DS franchise has shipped more than 100 million units and the PSP more than 50 million since both came to market in late 2004.

“The iPhone is a threat to other portable game platforms,” said Mitch Lasky, a partner with venture capital firm Benchmark Capital, and the former CEO of Jamdat Mobile, which was sold to Electronic Arts in 2005 for $680 million. “It could be just massive.”

Apple’s App Store went live only last July, but an entire network of developers has sprung up to create thousands of games, ranging from puzzles and arcade games to action and shooter games. Developers take 70 percent of the revenue, while Apple keeps 30 percent.

- Many new APIs for developers

At this early stage, there are no reports of any obvious changes in today’s seed. Apple is expected to release the final version of iPhone 3.0 to consumers this summer.

Mac Pro Benchmarks using geekbench

Primate Labs takes a look at the new Nehalem-based Mac Pros and shows the Geekbench numbers.

Apple released a lot of new hardware this month, and while I was able to post Geekbench results for the new iMac and Mac mini fairly quickly, it took a little while longer to get Geekbench results for the new Mac Pro.

While other folks, such as Rob-ART over at BareFeats, have done an excellent job compiling benchmark results for the latest Mac Pros, I still wanted to post Geekbench results for not just the latest Mac Pros, but all of the Mac Pros that Apple has produced.

Hit the source link below for the Geekbench results.
