Apple releases Safari update - version 4.0.5

Check Software Update! Apple has released Safari 4.0.5, which brings a number of performance enhancements and bug fixes to Apple’s browser. According to the updater, the following has been addressed:

  1. Performance improvements for Top Sites
  2. Stability improvements for 3rd-party plug-ins
  3. Stability improvements for websites with online forms and Scalable Vector Graphics
  4. Fixes an issue that prevented Safari from changing settings on some Linksys routers
  5. Fixes an issue that prevented some iWork.com users from commenting on documents

The update is available for Windows and OS X, but on the Mac side the specific problems addressed are issues with RSS feeds setting values in cookies, even if you have blocked cookies, and potential problems with WebKit’s loading of CSS, XML, and HTML scripts that could cause arbitrary code execution or crashing.

Apple releases Safari 4.0.2

Apple today released Safari 4.0.2, now available on Apple’s site. According to the support document associated with the release, the update addresses two security vulnerabilities that could be exploited by maliciously crafted websites.

Apple claims 11 million downloads of Safari 4

Introduced Monday following a multi-month public beta test, Apple bills Safari 4 as “the world’s fastest, most innovative browser,” saying its new Nitro JavaScript engine that executes JavaScript nearly eight times faster than IE 8 and more than four times faster than Firefox 3. The Cupertino, Calif-based company’s test also show it to load HTML web pages more than three times faster than IE 8 and three times faster than Firefox 3.

“Safari 4 is an incredible success on Mac and Windows with more than 11 million downloads in the first three days,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Safari users love the incredible speed and innovative features like Top Sites, Full History Search and Cover Flow.”

Safari 4 includes HTML 5 support for offline technologies and showcases support for advanced CSS Effects, enabling an entirely new class of web applications that feature rich media, graphics and fonts. The Apple browser is also the first browser to pass the Web Standards Project’s Acid3 test, which examines how well a browser adheres to CSS, JavaScript, XML and SVG standards that are specifically designed for dynamic web applications.

Apple releases Safari 3.2.3

Following the availability of Mac OS X 10.5.7, Apple on Tuesday released updates for Safari, Mac OS X Tiger systems and OS X 10.5.7 Server. Safari 3.2.3 is recommended for all Safari users, providing fixes for a number of security vulnerabilities. The downloads are available for Tiger, Leopard and Windows operating systems, with file sizes ranging from 20MB to 40MB. Security Update 2009-002 is recommended for all users of Mac OS X Tiger for Intel, PPC and Server systems.
