AT&T announces time for iPhone MMS availability Friday

American iPhone users should see multimedia messaging features unlocked late in the morning Friday on the west coast by way of a carrier update file that will be delivered through iTunes, AT&T announced Wednesday.

“MMS Update: We know you’ve been eager for this service so we wanted to offer a quick update on the launch plans for MMS on Friday, Sept. 25,” AT&T wrote on its official Facebook page. “Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday, the new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready to download through iTunes. We’ll provide the steps and all of the details you need right here at that time.”

That means east coast residents will likely see their update available sometime early Friday afternoon. It also confirms that an iTunes update to the phone’s carrier profile will be necessary for MMS to be activated.

AT&T “very nervous”

note published by DSLReports cited a source familiar with the company’s MMS upgrade as saying, “Starting at 10AM Eastern (on the 25), AT&T will send out a mass text to a group of iPhone users telling them that MMS now works on their phone.

Assuming all goes well, “They will keep doing groups of phones on the hour throughout the day,” the source said. Official word from company spokesman Seth Bloom said the upgrade would be targeted at early afternoon on the East Coast, or late morning for users on Pacific Time.

The source said AT&T was “very nervous” about the launch, due to seeing a surge in traffic from just a limited number of iPhone users selected to participate in advanced testing of the new service.

Report: iPhone grabs 32% of global handset profits

Apple’s iPhone now accounts for 8% of all mobile phone revenue and a whopping 32% of the industry’s handset profits, according to figures published by Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi.

The numbers, published by All Things Digital blogger John Paczkowski, aren’t limited just to the smartphone segment market, but look at all mobile phones sold in the first half of 2009, a $65.7 billion industry.

Apple earned just over $5 billion in the first half of the year, making it the fifth biggest player in terms of revenue, behind Nokia, Samsung, RIM, and LG. Apple lead the world in actually making money however, with just over $2 billion in operating profits. The company earned just over $100 million more than second place Nokia, gobbling up a 32% share of the global profits made in handset sales and achieving operating margins of 40%.

Makes me wonder how much less they can charge for the iphone, and still make a profit.

iPhone activation delays continue, Apple offers $30 iTunes credit

Though not widely publicised, the US launch of the iPhone 3G S on Friday was tarnished by a widespread activation issue with many owners of a new iPhone 3G S being told on Friday that activation could take up to 48 hours.

Today Apple has issued emails to those who are still suffering activation issues offering a $30 iTunes Store voucher:

Dear Apple Customer,

Thank you for your recent Apple Store order. We appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience caused by the delay in your iPhone activation.
We are still resolving the issue that was encountered while activating your iPhone with AT&T. Unfortunately, due to system issues and continued high activation volumes, this could take us up to an additional 48 hours to complete.
On Monday, you’ll receive an email from Apple with an iTunes Store credit in the amount of $30. We hope you will enjoy this gift and accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience this delay has caused.

Thank you for choosing Apple.

Sincerely,
Apple Online Store Team

It is unclear as to how many customers have been hit by the activation issues. The credit though, is a only a small token for the inconvenience experienced by customers without phone service or those unable to use their new iPhones.

Summary of early iPhone 3G s reviews

The early reviews for the iPhone 3G S are in and the conclusions are pretty much the same all around. As advertised, the new iPhone 3G S offers a faster experience, better camera, and impressive video recording. All reviewers felt that the upgrade from the 3G was more evolutionary than revolutionary.

Here are a summary of key impressions from the early reviews that have hit the web.

Walt Mossberg/WSJ

  • Speed: “the new model proved dramatically snappier in every way than my iPhone 3G. “
  • Battery: “the new model did much better [than the iPhone 3G], never hitting the red zone and rarely requiring interim charging at the office or in the car, even though, because I was testing it, I was pounding it much harder than usual”
  • Camera: “didn’t think the pictures it took were dramatically better than those on the old model”
  • Conclusion: “Both the new iPhone and iPhone OS are packed with features that make a great product even better. But, for many users, the software may be enough of a boost to keep them from buying the new model.”

Sun Times / Andy Ihnatko

  • Speed: “Everything feels faster. Safari on the iPhone 3G S seems as interactive as a desktop browser.”
  • Gaming: “Gaming has been kicked up a notch; intensive 3D games are elevated from ‘Wow, that’s a great frame rate for a phone!’ to simply ‘Wow.’”
  • Battery: “The 3G S has enough juice for a full day of normal use, but if you’re going to rely on it heavily throughout the day it’s still best to have an external battery.”
  • Video: “The video quality is impressively smooth and natural given the source, and the sound quality is practically astonishing”
  • Voice: “Voice control is a tough feature to successfully pull off on any device. No, the iPhone doesn’t pull it off.”
  • Flickr set of photos taken with the iPhone 3G S.

AT&T lets iPhone 3G S buyers upgrade early

AT&T this afternoon offered an olive branch to existing iPhone 3G owners by offering early upgrade pricing for the iPhone 3G S. AT&T already sold out of launch day iPhone 3G S pre-orders

Image from Chinese Engadget siteAT&T is already warning that those making iPhone 3G S pre-orders that they won’t get their handsets on launch.

The US carrier’s internal sales system is asking staff to tell customers that any pre-orders made on Saturday the 13th or later won’t ship on launch and instead will reach retail locations between 7 and 14 days after the order is made, overshooting the release date.

Those who delayed their pre-orders long enough but who still want an iPhone 3G S the same day will have to wait at an AT&T (or Apple) store until regular availability starts at 8 a.m. rather than the 7 a.m. early access time touted earlier this week, Boy Genius hears. Any pre-orders, however, will receive an e-mail once their device is in stock.

Photos of an iPhone 3G S unboxing turned up online long before the official release on June 19th, the images which have now been removed were posted on the Chinese version of Engadget.
