Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 9:49PM Just dowloading the update took over 3 hours and then the backup/restore part and then the verifying and the …. you get the picture. Of course it’s my fault for wanting to have it on the first day of release when everyone and their mother, brother, uncle, sister etc want is too. Earlier in the day I downloaded OS X 10.7.2 for my Mac Pro, and that took about 3 hours as well.
Apple’s new data center really can’t take all this traffic, can it? I hope all goes well with your updates. Maybe you should wait a couple of days for the traffic to die down and you’ll probably download the updates in about 20 minutes.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs announced on Wednesday that he is no longer fit to serve as the company’s chief executive officer, officially resigning from the position, which has been be filled by Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook.
The announcement came Wednesday evening in a press release directed at the Apple Board of Directors, as well as the company’s community. Jobs said he would like to stay on as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee, a wish that was granted by the board.
This is the letter below:
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.Steve

If your 2TB Time Capsule is filling up, you can now upgrade to 3TB. Personally, I have never used the Time Capsule but wired external raid drives. If you don’t require super speedy backups, then this would be a good idea with many placement options since it’s wireless.
Apple has now posted store pages for the updated 2 TB ($299) and 3 TB ($499) Time Capsules. The new models offer the same price points as before, but with the upgraded capacities.
Apple has also posted a new store page for the AirPort Extreme, although it is still unclear what improvements are included over the previous generation. Price remains $179.

I’m excited like a kid on Christmas morning. What’s not to like, iOS 5, OS X Lion, iCloud. It would be nice if current MobileMe customers get iCloud streaming for free, but probably not likely.
DaringFireball’s John Gruber has posted his thoughts about today’s event but seems to know very little for certain. The most tantalizing quote he offers, but also one that he describes as fourth hand information is as follows:
Dont think of iCloud as the new MobileMe; think of iCloud as the new iTunes.
Did you know Apple is paying the big four music companies $150 million for the right to stream their music?
Anyway, I’m off to watch the live coverage on Engadget.

Tuesday May 3, 2011:
The new iMacs will be announced today, and even though they will probably retain their screen sizes, they will have the new Sandy Bridge processors and ditch the miniDisplay ports for the new Thunderbolt port.
I have a feeling that the new quad-core iMacs will be faster than my not so old Mac Pro from 2010, bummer.
Jon Arnason
The new machine comes in four basic configurations: two 21.5-inch models with a 2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 and 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 processor respectively, and two 27-inch models with a 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 and 3.1GHz Quad-Core Intel i5. Apple is also offering build-to-order Web-only options to bump the 21.5-inch model to a 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, and the 27-inch model to a 3.4GHz Intel Core i7; the i7 processor upgrades add $200 to the cost.
The low-end 21.5-inch model sports a 500GB hard drive and an AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB of video RAM, while the more powerful 21.5-inch configuration has a 1TB hard drive and an AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB of video RAM. Both versions feature a 1920 by 1080 pixel display and 4GB of memory. They retail for $1,199 and $1,499 respectively.
Both of the 27-inch models sport a 1TB hard drive, 4GB of RAM, and a 2560 by 1440 pixel display. The 2.7GHz model has an AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB of video RAM, while the 3.1GHz model has an AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1GB of video RAM. They cost $1,699 and $1,999 respectively.
Additional build-to-order options include 2TB hard drives, an additional 256GB solid-state drive alongside the main drive, and up to 16GB of DDR3 memory. Customers can choose between a Magic Mouse or a Magic Trackpad with their order.
Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 12:25AM The next major revision of Apple’s video editing software was announced today at the 2011 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas. Called Final Cut Pro X, it’s available sometime in June for US$299 from the Mac App Store.
Apple says Final Cut Pro X has been rewritten from the ground up, with support for 64-bit, a user-interface redesign, and a whole host of new features. The software takes advantage of core Mac OS X features like Cocoa, Core Animation, Open CL, and Grand Central Dispatch to speed up and fine-tune performance.
In addition to a complete UI overhaul, Final Cut Pro X boasts a newly designed floating point linear color system, up-to-4K-resolution-independent playback, a magnetic timeline for keeping audio and video in sync, Compound Clips for easy video nesting, non-destructive color balancing, automatic audio cleanup, and Smart Collections for organizing clips.
