The Squarespace iPhone app is here

I have been waiting for this app a long time. It was announced months ago, but has taken this long to be approved by the Apple app team. The info below I took directly from the Squarespace blog. And of course it was posted using my iPhone.

The Squarespace iPhone app has a completely custom user interface we have developed in house that matches your Squarespace site’s look and feel completely. We’ve also developed the only iPhone application on any major publishing platform that contains a iPhone native statistics interface, tightly integrating your phone, your site, and your data. The main features of the application include:

Posting - Snap photos on your phone, and quickly post them to your blog! Or easily draft blog posts directly from your “Post” tab — all of your current tags and categories will be there.
Content Management - All of your posts will be accessible directly from your “Manage” tab. You can edit drafts, delete posts and preview posts with ease.
Multiple Account Management - Your “Accounts” tab allows you to manage content for multiple Squarespace sites. You can save a draft post for one site and then easily jump to another site to schedule a post for later in the day.
Viewing Your Statistics - You can now view your Squarespace site statistics right from the application’s statistics tab. Unique visits, page views, popular search terms, RSS subscribers and top referrers are all included.
Live Site Preview - Double check your work before you click “publish” with the app’s “Preview” tab.
We’ve tried to include all the best features of Squarespace in our initial release. So, download the app and let us know what you think!

Note: Due to the extremely long approval times Apple requires — we are already well into the next version of this application. In that version, you’ll have comment management and approval as well as a number of other small refinements. We know this is a big feature, and it’s coming extremely soon.

Apple Sees Billionth App Downloaded in Just Nine Months

Well holy crap. Exactly 287 days after the iTunes App Store opened its virtual doors and made its first sale, Apple has served up its billionth App Store download.

The one billionth app, Bump created by Bump Technologies, was downloaded by Connor Mulcahey, age 13, of Weston, CT. As the grand prize winner of Apple’s one billion app countdown contest, Connor will receive a 17-inch MacBook Pro, a 32GB iPod touch, a $10,000 iTunes gift card and a Time Capsule.

“The revolutionary App Store has been a phenomenal hit with iPhone and iPod touch users around the world, and we’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve the astonishing milestone of one billion apps downloaded,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “In nine months, the App Store has completely revolutionized the mobile industry and this is only the beginning.”

Apple Issues Statement on “Baby Shaker” App

Apple has officially apologised in a statement today over a 99-cent iPhone application called “Baby Shaker” which went on sale on the App Store yesterday but was quickly removed.

The application from developer Sikalosoft asked players to quiet a crying baby by shaking the device.

Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris said in a statement that the game was “deeply offensive” and “We sincerely apologize for this mistake.”

I find it amazing that a disgusting application such as this was even considered, and worse yet approved.

Sneak Peek at Skype for iPhone, Available Tuesday

Skype is set to launch its iPhone application Tuesday, bringing its much-anticipated Net-based phone service to Apple’s mobile platform. With the Skype iPhone app, users will be able to make free calls using Wi-Fi to other Skype users as well as use their Skype accounts to make reduced price calls to traditional landline phones. Skype announced its iPhone application will be available on Tuesday for free, with a version for the BlackBerry available in May. Mobile versions of Skype are already available for Nokia, Windows Mobile, and Google Android phones.

From what we can tell, the Skype for iPhone looks great; but it has some drawbacks. One disappointment is that users won’t be able to place calls over cellular networks, but only via Wi-Fi. Still, for international callers especially, Skype’s iPhone app will save callers money by allowing them to avoid AT&T’s traditional wireless phone network and adds the convenience of allowing Skype users to use their iPhone handset for Skype calls.

Looking more like a traditional iPhone app rather than the desktop Windows counterpart most of its 400 million users are used to, Skype for iPhone features five tabs at the bottom of the screen, displaying contacts, chats, a calling panel, call history, and your profile (with Facebook-style status).

Skype for iPhone will use phone numbers directly from your phone’s address book, so no more nasty duplicated contact lists. It even displays your contacts’ photos (if they have one set up on Skype). Conference calling is available, but for the moment you can only take part in one if someone invites you.
