Amazon launches 9.7-inch Kindle DX as promised

Amazon as promised announced the Kindle DX, its extra-large version of its e-book reader. The device centers on a 9.7-inch, 824x1200 E Ink display that both provides a larger view of newspapers and other articles but is pitched as particularly well-suited for periodicals, textbooks and other large documents: a built-in accelerometer lets it tilt on its side to view charts and other information better-suited to a landscape view.

Native PDF support is equally new and lets owners view many documents without having to convert them through Amazon’s e-mail service. The DX doubles the internal storage to 4GB, enough for 3,500 books. Now if only my daughter’s college textbooks could be loaded on this thing, then I’d be excited.  Amazon plans to sell the Kindle DX later this summer for $489.

iTunes store or Amazon?

I must admit that I love the Apple iTunes store. The ease of use and incredible library makes it hard not to like. But of course there are alternatives, and the best “other” store I have used is the Amazon MP3 store.

It used to be the less expensive option, but with the recent price increases, the Amazon MP3 store has raised it’s prices of new tracks to match Apple’s $1.29 price point.

The only reason I’d recommend the Amazon store over Apple, is for the great deals that they come out with on a daily basis. I purchased the “Who’s Next” album by the Who for $1.99 last month, and of course it was DRM free. Apple iTunes current price is $11.99.

Amazon.com offers 770 MP3 song downloads for free in its Amazon MP3 Store. Choose songs from artists such as Flight of the Conchords, Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, Neko Case, Beirut, The Aggrolites, and more. Amazon MP3 Downloader is required.

Blu-Ray releases for April 14, 2009

I have to admit that this weeks releases are pretty pathetic.  If it weren’t for one of the titles having some eye candy (The Spirit), it would be a total waste.  If the studios don’t have anything new to release, why not remaster some great old titles that have yet to be released on Blu-ray.

So here are some of this weeks releases:

  • Pride and Prejudice
  • The Spirit
  • The Story of India
  • Mean Girls
  • The Thirteenth Floor
  • Splinter
  • Imax: Deep Sea
  • 8 Mile
