Intel 6-Core Xeon Processor
If like me you are wondering what the differences are in the new Mac Pro’s, and Macworld has yet to test them giving us the Speedmark scores for comparison, you might like to check out these results.
I have been wanting to upgrade my desktop for a while, and have been waiting for these new updates. But which one to buy? Of course I know that the 4-core base model will be the slowest, but what are the differences in the 6-core and 8-core models? That is what I sought to find out.
Going to cpubenchmark.net I checked the results for all of those processors and at least got an idea how much faster the other optional processors performed.
So here are the results of the processors in models I’m comparing:
- The $2499 2.8GHz Quad-Core “Nehalem” chip scored————4975
- The $2899 3.2GHz Quad-Core “Nehalem” chip scored————6457
- The $3499 dual 2.4GHz 8-Core “Westmere” chip scored———9788
- The $3699 3.3GHz 6-Core “Westmere” chip scored—————10328
- The $4999 dual 2.66GHz 12-Core “Westmere” chip scored——13007
The 6-Core $3699 Mac Pro has the fastest single processor in the market today. Is it worth the extra $1200? probably, if you are a hardcore encoding nut, or just like to have the fastest current processor. I’m waiting to see how the 8-Core scores against the others in the Macworld Speedmark test before I make my decision.
