Apple sells more iPods, less Macs in March quarter. Makes tons of money.

Apple on Wednesday announced revenue of $8.16 billion —up 9 percent from the year-ago quarter — and a net quarterly profit of $1.21 billion.

Apple showed mixed results for product sales. Mac shipments were down 3% for the quarter, with sales of 2.22 million computers. Despite predictions that iPod sales would level off or even decline, the company sold over 11 million devices which marks a gain of 3% percent over last year’s quarter.

The iPhone showed the best performance for the quarter, with sales of 3.79 million units. The shipments beat Wall Street estimates by almost a half million handsets. Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray earlier in the day adjusted his forecast to 3.7 million devices, following AT&T’s disclosure of 1.6 million iPhone activations for the corresponding quarter.
